• Support for Students with Disabilities

Question: Does every child with a disability need Special Education?

Answer: No, some kids have disabilities and may not need any extra support in school. Often, individuals with disabilities can learn compensation strategies to help them succeed or overcome obstacles they may face because of their disability. But, other kids with disabilities may need more support, which can range from a little bit of extra support in the classroom to more intensive services. The most important thing is that not every child is the same and the impact of a disability is not the same for every child or individual.

Question: What is the difference between a 504 Plan and an Individualized Education Plan, IEP?

Answer: A 504 Plan is for students with disabilities who can succeed in the classroom with accommodations and do not require special education. An IEP is for students who require modifications to the curriculum and specialized instruction. These students have a disability that substantially and adversely impacts their ability to succeed in a general education classroom. They require intensive support in order to succeed in the school environment when compared to their peers.
